November is Diabetes Awareness Month. Here at Cali’flour Foods we want to get the word out to help prevent the spread of this crippling disease! Did you know that one in three people are prediabetic? Even more astounding, over 90% of us aren’t even aware of it! A precursor to diabetes, prediabetes occurs when blood sugar levels are higher than normal but don’t quite reach the levels seen with Type II Diabetes. Developing prediabetes doesn’t simply lead to diabetes, it also increases the risk of heart attack and stroke.
Yes, diabetes is reaching epidemic proportions. However, prediabetes is reversible and educating yourself on the dietary do’s and don’ts is the very best place to start! Let’s begin by talking about what to eat and what to limit or avoid altogether.
The Good Stuff:
Vegetables: raw, lightly steamed, roasted, baked, or grilled
Fruits: fresh, frozen, canned (without added sugar or syrup)
Legumes: kidney, black, navy, white, garbanzo (chickpeas), lima & pinto beans
Lean meats (skin off): Chicken, turkey, trimmed pork, fish, shellfish, lean red meat
Whole grains: Quinoa, brown rice, oatmeal buckwheat, oatmeal
Low-fat dairy products: low-fat yogurt, cheese, & salad dressing, skim milk
Let’s avoid this:
Fried Foods
Fatty red meats
Refined grains: pasta, white rice, white bread, refined cereals, crackers
Sweets: cookies, pies, cakes, sweet breads, candy
Fruit juices and sodas
